Research project

Project: Visualization of Process Flows in Hospital Information Systems

Project team: Frieda Kaiser (Leader), Elske Ammenwerth

Time span: 2002 - 2003

Cooperation partner: TILAK, Quality Assurance Department, Med. Planning and Documentation (Univ.-Doz. Dr. Stühlinger)

Background:

The standardisation of process flows in health care is a very important topic nowadays. The TILAK has been working towards defining standardized process flows in the Innsbruck university hospitals for a longer period of time in order to improve processes.

Goals:

The goal is to analyze which general concepts and techniques exist for the visualization of standardized process flows and which of these are sensible to implement in the electronic patient record in a hospital. The goal is to analyze and empirically examine which of these concepts and techniques can be implemented in the Cerner-Millenium computer supported application system at the Innsbruck University Medical Center. The process ‚discharge management' is chosen as an example.

Methods:

Performing a literature search, carrying out a current process state analysis, application of modeling techniques, communication with IT specialists as well as physicians at the Innsbruck University Medical Center.

Results:

Concepts and techniques for the implementation of alerts and reminders in hospital information systems were suggested. Concretely, two implementation suggestions were made. The implementation is currently taking place.
